|J'ai vécu mes années d'adolescente et d'étudiante dans une crainte augmentée par la présence d'un régime totalitaire. Mariée à la fin de mes études universitaires et devenue médecin psychiatre, j'ai pratiqué les douze premières années en Roumanie. En 1973, je suis partie avec mon époux au Maroc, tous deux sous contrat de coopérants. Après quatre années d'activité intense, notre ancien projet de quitter le pays d'origine afin de retrouver la liberté au sein d'un monde démocratique est devenu réalité. Nous avons élu la Belgique comme terre d'accueil, en identifiant ce pays comme le nôtre. Nous y vivons depuis trente-six ans. La décision d'écrire ce livre est arrivée progressivement comme un devoir envers la mémoire de mes parents, à l'égard aussi de mon mari qui m'accompagne depuis un demi-siècle et ensuite, à l'intention de mes fidèles patients qui continuent encore de s'enquérir de mon sort. Ma pensée se porte également vers mes amis et connaissances qui m'ont encouragée et soutenue dans ma démarche.| Roumanie, Maroc, Belgique... Trois pays, trois époques d'une existence que Maria-Elena Bertea-Hanciu aborde d'une manière délibérément fragmentaire, extrayant de chacune d'elle les moments forts, les figures importantes, les rencontres marquantes. Avec son écriture qui plonge dans la mémoire, mais aussi avec son écriture en mémoire de, cette oeuvre autobiographique s'impose par sa modestie et son humilité... mais plus encore par son ton paisible et serein, éloigné de toute amertume, et sa volonté de placer dans la lumière les êtres aimés...
